A lot urges have been started to reduce the usage of plastics in daily life. But have you really thought what really happen to the plastics after been thrown? So, I will be doing a small series of posts related to microplastics. In this post, I will giving brief explanation about microplastics.
According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of U.S Department of Commerce have defined microplastics as below.
“Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long which can be harmful to our ocean and aquatic life.”
There are two types of microplastics; primary microplastics and secondary microplastics. Primary microplastics are created by the manufacturer to be a certain small/tiny size that will be used for a particular purpose. Good example of primary microplastics are microbeads. Microbeads are widely used in cosmetics items, toothpaste and exfoliating items such as scrubs.
Secondary microplastics are larger pieces of plastic break down over time and release these small pieces into the environment. Weathering, such as from waves, sunlight, or other physical stress, breaks the plastic into smaller pieces. Usually, it originates from waste that wasn’t managed properly.
That’s all for now. Our next post will be related to microplastics also. As I mentioned early, I will be doing a small series posts related to microplastics.
